Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our programs, classes, pricing, and more.

Getting Started
Do I need prior experience to join?+
Not at all! We welcome complete beginners of all ages. Our instructors are trained to work with students at every level โ€” from your very first kick to advanced black belt techniques. Your first free trial class is designed specifically for newcomers.
What is the minimum age to start Taekwondo?+
We welcome students as young as 4 years old in our Little Dragons program, which is designed specifically for toddlers and young children. This class focuses on basic movement, balance, coordination, and fun rather than competition.
How does the free trial class work?+
Simply register online (it takes about 2 minutes) and we'll contact you within 24 hours to schedule your first class. Come in comfortable athletic clothing โ€” no special gear or uniform needed. Our instructor will introduce you to the basics and make sure you feel welcome. There is zero pressure to enroll after the trial.
What should I wear/bring to my first class?+
For your first trial class, wear comfortable athletic clothing โ€” shorts or sweatpants and a t-shirt work perfectly. No shoes are needed on the mat (Taekwondo is practiced barefoot). Once you enroll, you'll receive your uniform (dobok) and we'll guide you on any equipment needed as you progress.
Am I too old to start Taekwondo?+
Absolutely not! We have adult students who started in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. Taekwondo is adaptable to all fitness levels. Our adult classes focus on fitness, flexibility, self-defense, and personal growth at a pace that works for each individual.
Programs & Classes
How many times a week should I attend?+
We recommend at least 2 classes per week for consistent progress. Our Starter plan includes 2 classes/week. Dedicated students who want to advance faster and compete can attend unlimited classes on the Champion or Family plan. More practice = faster improvement, but we never pressure attendance.
How does the After School Program work exactly?+
Students are picked up (or dropped off) at the academy at 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. The afternoon includes snack time, supervised homework assistance, and a Taekwondo class. Parents pick up at 6:30 PM. It's a complete, productive afternoon all in one place.
When is Summer Camp and who is it for?+
Our Summer Intensive Camp runs July 7โ€“18, 2025, Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM. It's open to students ages 6โ€“16. The cost is $399 for the full two-week program, which includes lunch, snacks, daily Taekwondo training, team building activities, a mini tournament, and a graduation ceremony.
Are private lessons available?+
Yes! Private one-on-one lessons are available with any of our instructors for $65 per 60-minute session. They're great for students who want accelerated progress, competition preparation, or personalized attention on specific techniques. Champion and Family plan members receive one or two complimentary private sessions per month.
Can the whole family train together?+
Yes! We offer family classes where parents and children can train side by side. Our Family Plan covers up to 4 family members. Training together is a great way to bond and keep each other motivated. Contact us to find out which class times work best for a family group.
Belt System & Progress
How long does it take to get a black belt?+
On average, a dedicated student training 2โ€“3 times per week takes 3โ€“5 years to reach 1st degree black belt (1st Dan). Progress depends on consistent attendance, effort, and individual development. Our instructors will guide and support every step of your journey.
How often are belt tests held?+
Belt promotions are held twice a year โ€” spring and fall โ€” as formal ceremonies. Instructors evaluate each student's readiness individually, so not everyone tests at every promotion. Belt testing fees are included in all membership plans (no extra charge for members).
What is the belt order at HTKD?+
Our belt system follows the Kukkiwon standard: White โ†’ Yellow โ†’ Orange โ†’ Green โ†’ Blue โ†’ Purple โ†’ Red โ†’ Brown โ†’ Black (1st Dan and above). Each belt level has specific techniques and forms (Poomsae) that must be mastered before advancement.
Is HTKD Kukkiwon certified?+
Yes! Our founder Master Nakul Sharma holds a 4th Degree Black Belt from Kukkiwon โ€” the World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea. Kukkiwon certification is the gold standard in Taekwondo, recognized internationally and by the Olympics. Your belt rank earned here is globally recognized.
Pricing & Membership
How much do classes cost?+
Monthly plans start at $89/month for the Starter plan (2 classes/week), $149/month for unlimited classes (Champion), and $249/month for up to 4 family members (Family plan). After School is $299/month. Summer Camp is $399 for 2 weeks.
Are there long-term contracts?+
No long-term contracts. All monthly plans are month-to-month. Give us 7 days' notice before your next billing date to cancel with no penalties. We believe our quality of instruction and community will keep you here โ€” not a contract.
Are there any registration or hidden fees?+
No registration fee for students who enroll online. No hidden fees. Belt testing is included in all membership plans. A uniform (dobok) is required โ€” available for $45. For new Family plan members, one uniform is provided free.
Do you offer discounts?+
Yes! We offer a 10% sibling discount for additional children on individual plans (the Family plan is usually better value for 3+ members). We also offer a 10% military and first responder discount. Contact us to apply discounts to your account.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We accept all major credit and debit cards, cash, and checks. Monthly tuition is billed automatically on the 1st of each month for recurring plans. One-time fees (summer camp, events) can be paid at the time of registration.
Safety & Facilities
Is Taekwondo safe for young children?+
Yes. Safety is one of our six core values. Young children's classes focus on non-contact fundamentals โ€” kicks, forms, balance, and coordination โ€” without sparring. Contact sparring is introduced gradually and only with full protective gear once students are ready. Our instructors are trained in age-appropriate teaching methods.
What are your class sizes?+
We keep class sizes small to ensure each student gets individual attention. Most classes have 8โ€“15 students with at least one certified instructor. Larger classes have an assistant instructor. Small class sizes mean better instruction and faster progress.
Is the facility clean and safe?+
Our facility is cleaned daily. The training mats are high-quality foam mats designed specifically for martial arts. We have changing rooms, restrooms, and a waiting area for parents. We follow all applicable safety and licensing requirements.
